After almost five years and many adventures I graduated from the School of Journalism in Utrecht, The Netherlands. This website shows you several of my productions. Some of the texts and video’s will be written in English, but most of them will be in Dutch. I decided to also write you in English. This because of my slogan and life aspiration: being a cross media and borders journalist.
The text below is something that I wrote when I first aired my own website a couple of years ago. I have rewritten some of the sentences, but could not bare to take this text down. It is still who I am and I hope that as I will grow in being a journalist and documentary filmmaker, this text will still be my motivation. I hope you will enjoy reading, listing and looking at my website!
When I was Little I was a Dreamer
I was one of those kids who believed in fairy tales. Who believed that their neighbors were witches and who truly believed that after twelve their stuffed animals would come to life.
I dreamed about going to America, about becoming a pilot, FBI agent, cowgirl or a journalist. I believed and I still believe that dreams are there to come true. You cannot live without dreaming. Today I still believe that dreams are a big part of my life. They determine what kind of person I will be, eventually.
“Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don not believe in magic will never find it.” – Roald Dahl
Sometimes it is hard not to forget to dream. But then I remember who I was when I was little and how devoted I was to believing in magic. The dreams are not the same but they are still there. Today as a young journalist and documentary filmmaker I have new dreams to chase.
Maybe it is not completely realistic, but it is the main reason why I wanted to become a journalist. I believe in a better world and my dreams involve being a part of that. I want to contribute something to the process of a more tolerant and loving world. Now I am finally graduated. But I know I still have many years to go before I can turn my dreams into reality. During the meantime I will do my utter best to make sure that I will be ready for it when the time comes.
Yours Sincerely,
Mariska Dekker – Cross media and borders journalist
